Convex or microconvex?

Stay with the convex probe if you will be scanning large dogs (Labrador or bigger) or are on a tight budget. If you are scanning a range of breeds or have small-medium dogs yourself, definitely upgrade to a micro convex probe if you can afford to do so, as it will deliver much better image quality.

Do I need two probes?

No. A micro convex probe will be suitable for all breeds of dog; a convex probe will ‘work’ on all dogs but may be difficult on toy breeds due to its large size.
